Background to the Savannah Pack
by Mira, the Fire Starter

Overall, most lycanthropes (or shape-shifters) are going to fall in the werewolf or werefox category, but there are a few others (i.e. cats, large birds of prey, and bears – though I don’t think I’ve personally met any of them).

However, the one pack I can offer some insight into is the Savannah pack. But I first need to stress that this pack is very much unlike any other pack within the United States due to its patriarch.

For more than 150 years, the Savannah Pack has been run/controlled/dominated by the head of the Rainer family. This is highly unusual for a single family to rule a pack as power typically changes hands as different members grows in strength and stature within the group. Now, that doesn’t mean the Savannah Pack is weaker than the others. In fact, it has proven to be quite the opposite.

The leader of the Savannah Pack (also known as the Alpha) has to go through the same rigorous tests as any other pack. However, this family has spent lifetimes training, testing, and honing their skills in an effort to produce some of the strongest, swiftest, and most skilled leaders. Furthermore, this intensive training has, in the long run, resulted in increased stability within the pack as power changes less frequently than with other packs.

Due to the stability of the social hierarchy and leadership of the Savannah Pack, I have been able to build and maintain a strong relationship with the Savannah werewolves. This is unusual under most circumstances as relations between nightwalkers and lycanthropes have always been uneasy at best.

One other oddity for the Savannah Pack is that, in general, between 70 and 90 percent of the pack is composed of Rainer family members, whether by birth or marriage. For a werewolf to move to the Savannah region, he/she must first petition the head of the Pack, providing in-depth information about him/herself. If he/she passes that initial test, the applicant must then pass a series of tests. This process is similar for all packs, though the intensity of the testing is different for each group.

As a result of all this intensive training and selectivity, the Savannah Pack is one of the strongest within the United States. Currently, the Savannah Pack has 19 members. The pack Alpha is Barrett Rainer.
